Marble Retreat Christian Counseling
- Fellows

To accommodate our growing number of guests and provide ongoing Christian Counseling for guests when the Cappas are traveling on behalf of Marble Retreat, we have invited a select group of therapists to join our team. These "Marble Fellows" share the Marble Christian Counseling vision, are trained and experienced professionals, and provide the same level of care that has been the hallmark of Marble Retreat.

Marble Fellows are gifted in the counseling field and are uniquely equipped to lead the brief intensive Christian counseling groups held at Marble Retreat. Having their own practices and ministries around the country, the Fellows lead one or two sessions a year at the Marble Retreat campus in the spectacular mountains of Colorado

All Marble Fellows have professional Christian counseling credentials and have trained in our spiritually-sensitive approach to brief intensive therapy. We have come to believe that it is God who convenes each group who shares the 8 days together. The Marble Fellows are part of this Providence, offering their own unique gifts to their therapy groups.

Dr. Donald Harvey, received his BA from Southern Nazarene University, MA from the University of Alabama, and his Ph.D. in Marriage and Family Therapy from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (VPI) in Blacksburg, Virginia. A practicing therapist for over 25 years, he served for 10 years as Clinical Director of Christian Counseling Services in Nashville, Tennessee where he also supervised a telephone consultation ministry for clergy families.

During his early years of professional service, Don increasingly felt God's leading to work with marriages. This "specialization" is not only evidenced by his graduate training in marriage and family therapy, but also in his wide variety of professional activities. Don has authored nine books dealing with various marriage issues: The Drifting Marriage (1988); When the One You Love Wants to Leave (1989); The Spiritually Intimate Marriage (1991); A Change of Heart: Restoring Hope in Marriage (1993); Love Secured (1994); Surviving Betrayal: Counseling an Adulterous Marriage (1995); I Love You-Talk to Me! (1996); Talk Your Way to an Intimate Marriage (2000) and Living in a Glass House: Surviving the Scrutiny of Ministry and Marriage (2002).

In 1993, Don joined the graduate psychology faculty at Trevecca Nazarene University where he established a Master of Marriage and Family Therapy (MMFT) degree program that he continues to direct. Though now involved with the training of others, Don states that his "true passion still continues to be in working directly with couples." In recent years, this desire for working with couples has sharpened with growing concern for the unique challenges of clergy marriages.

In addition to academic responsibilities, Don maintains a private therapy practice, is in demand as a speaker at professional conferences, is a frequent guest on both radio and television, and with Jan, conducts marriage enrichment weekends in churches throughout the country. Don is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and is both a Clinical Member and Approved Supervisor in the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT).

Jan Harvey, received her BS from Southern Nazarene University in Oklahoma City and her MMFT (Master of Marriage and Family Therapy) degree from Trevecca Nazarene University. Jan's professional counseling experience began in social work in a variety of public and private settings. Until 1994 her professional focus was infertility and adoption. In 1994 she became a Career Counselor for Trevecca Nazarene University and now helps college students get established in their chosen career fields.

Jan also maintains an active Marriage and Family therapy practice in Nashville and particularly enjoys working with a young adult population in preventative ways through Pre-Marital and Pre-Engagement counseling. She and Don just completed their first co-authoring project by writing a chapter for The Complete Marriage Book (Jan and David Stoop, Eds.) 2002.

Jan and Don live in Franklin, TN where they are enjoying the "launching" stage of life. Their "launched" children include Reid (26) a chemist with an environmental lab, and Paige (24) the Publicist for the W Publishing Group. Don is a confirmed eclectic fisherman (don't bring up this topic unless you plan for a long conversation), and Jan enjoys anything creative--cooking, designing, gardening.

Mike and Kari Mackenzie are the newest additions to our Marble Retreat Fellows. We are delighted to have them join our team! Mike has been a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) for 11 years while Kari is a Registered Psychotherapist with the State of Colorado. Both are currently working on their Doctor of Ministry degrees, specializing in Clergy Care, at Lincoln Christian Seminary (www.lccs.edu), and bring to Marble Retreat a rich fund of counseling experience, compassion and a deep commitment to serving God and those of the faith. They currently reside in Longmont, Colorado, have a great love of the outdoors and specialize in issues related to couples, such as marital intimacy and communication.

Smith and Mary Helen Noland from Dallas are our most veteran Fellows. They periodically leave the heat of Dallas and the busyness of Smith's counseling practice and M.H.'s career in education administration to lead groups at Marble Retreat since the early 90's (usually in the summer - an indication of their wisdom).

Smith is a Licensed Professional Counselor and head of Bent Tree Counseling Center, formerly a clinical therapist and Adult Program Director with the Minirth-Meier Clinic and Day Hospital in Richardson, Texas. He also served as counseling pastor on a church staff for five years. Mary Helen was in the classroom for 15 plus years and is presently director of admissions for Trinity Christian Academy in Addison, Texas. Smith and Mary Helen's relaxed dispositions and unique understanding of ministry life fit in well with the atmosphere of Marble Retreat Christian Counseling.

Marble Retreat Christian Counseling exists to bring healing and restore hope through Christ-centered brief intensive counseling for marriage issues, ministry problems, spiritual problems, grief & loss, stress, depression, anxiety and any other of life's challenges.
