On January 20, our co-founder of Marble Retreat and dear friend, Louis McBurney, quite suddenly and shockingly succumbed to head injuries he’d unknowingly suffered approximately two months earlier, the result of a fall he suffered while descending his garage attic ladder. Paul Louis McBurney, 70, died Jan 20, 2009, Valley View Hospital.
Dr. McBurney was born in Temple, TX on February 14, 1938. He graduated in 1960 with BA and MS degrees from Baylor University in Waco, TX and received his MD from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston in 1965, where he was named Outstanding Student in Psychiatry and received the Award for General Excellency in Psychiatry.
He moved with his family to Carbondale, CO in 1973 where he and his wife, Melissa, co-founded Marble Retreat, a counseling center for clergy, their spouses and all believers. As Co-Director of Marble Retreat, Dr. McBurney helped to counsel over 3000 church leaders. In 2001 he and Melissa received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Association of Christian Counselors. In 2003, the two of them transitioned from the directorship of Marble Retreat and focused their energies on Marble Retreat Worldwide, ministering to clergy in both Kenya and Thailand.
Dr. McBurney was certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN). He wrote numerous articles for publication and authored Every Pastor Needs A Pastor, Counseling Christian Workers, and most recently, Real Questions, Real Answers About Sex (Zondervan Book Publishers).
Dr. McBurney was active in the Roaring Fork Valley in many different capacities and served as an elder at the Church at Redstone from its inception in the 1977. He loved camping, hiking, skiing, and traveling—he visited all 7 continents. Also an avid runner, he ran his first marathon in 2003 and his second in 2008.
Dr. McBurney is survived by his wife of 47 years, Melissa; son Bruce McBurney of Tempe AZ; daughter Andrea Meador of Lewisville, TX; and son Brent McBurney of Alexandria, VA; brother Robert McBurney of Temple TX; sister Alice Tomlin of Pendleton TX; sister Anne Troutman of Cary NC; and 5 grandchildren.
